 NETRA (Near-Eye Tool for Refractive Assessment), is a project of the Media Lab's Camera Culture research group. A small plastic device which currently can be produced for less than US$2. This can easily clipped onto a mobile phone screen. To use it, simply hold the device up to the eye, look into it, and use the phone’s keypad until two patterns overlap. This is repeated several times per eye, with the patterns at different angles. In this process software loaded onto the phone computes and provides the data needed to create a prescription. The whole process takes about two minutes.
As many as two billion people worldwide have refractive errors of the eye, and according to the World Health Organization, these errors, left uncorrected, are the world's second-highest cause of blindness. This technology surely helpful in in the developing countries for small size and low cost of the device.

One-click PC shut down

This is really very easy one but very effective one. Enjoy it!

First, create a shortcut on your desktop by right-clicking on the desktop, choosing New, and then choosing Shortcut. The Create Shortcut Wizard appears. In the box asking for the location of the shortcut, type shutdown. After you create the shortcut, double-clicking on it will shut down your PC.





But you can do much more with a shutdown shortcut than merely shut down your PC. You can add any combination of several switches to do extra duty, like this
shutdown -r -t 01 -c “Rebooting your PC”
Double-clicking on that shortcut will reboot your PC after a one-second delay and display the message “Rebooting your PC.” The shutdown command includes a variety of switches you can use to customize it. Table 1-3 lists all of them and describes their use.

I use this technique to create two shutdown shortcuts on my desktop—one for turning off my PC, and one for rebooting. Here are the ones I use:

shutdown -s -t 03 -c “Bye Bye!”
shutdown -r -t 03 -c “I ll be back !”

Indicates the duration of delay, in seconds, before performing the action.

Countdown timer for shutdown computer

Many a times people like to sleep on music, but the problem is that the comp will continue running the whole night. Here is how you can create a countdown timer to shutdown your comp in your specified time.

Go to run in start menu and input this command

 shutdown -s -t 3600


this will create a countdown timer which will go off in 3600 seconds (1 Hour). you can replace the 3600 to any time limit you want the comp to shutdown ,but remember the time should always be expressed in seconds i.e if u want the comp to shutdown in Half an hour you have to write 1800 and so on...

If you are as lazy as me and don't want to input the command each time, then create a batch file or shortcut

Batch:
open a notepad and type

shutdown -s -t 3600

now in the files menu select "save as" and save this file as Activate.bat

Just double clicking this file will activate your timer

Shortcut:
On the desktop right click and create a new shortcut. in the location type

shutdown -s -t 3600

Give it any name like "Activate timer"
Again, double clicking this newly created shortcut will do the same.

FORCING THE SHUTDOWN:

another operator that you can use with this command is -f . this will force a shutdown on system. suppose you want the comp to shutdown as quickly as possible you can give command

shutdown -s -f -t 00

here we have used a -f operator and the delay is set to 0 seconds.

(as we are talking about quick shutdown, u can use command
c:windowssystem32tsshutdn.exe 00 /POWERDOWN /DELAY:00 also)

STOPPING THE TIMER:
Any time when you want to stop the running timer use a -a operator(standing for abort)

the command is

shutdown -a

You can use it in any way u prefer, like direct input in run (or command prompt) , create a .bat file or create a shortcut on desktop

SOME OTHER OPTIONS:

shutdown -r (restarting)
shutdown -r -t 3600 (timer for restarting in 1 hour)
shutdown -r -f -t 00 (quick reboot)

How to Use Multiple Google Account in Chrome

Google has infiltrated into our digital lives so much. It is almost difficult to think anything without Google. We are dependent on the Google for finding information on the internet as well as using its many products like Gmail, Calendar, Buzz, Reader, etc.
Most of the products didn’t allow multiple logins thus today we will tell you a lesser known feature of Google Chrome web browser. This is called as incognito mode. This mode is similar to InPrivate browsing mode of Internet Explorer. When you open a new incognito window then all the cookies from the standard session are not saved and you can open your other Google account. The shortcut to open this mode is Ctrl+Shift+N.

More details about this mode can be obtained from the help center of Chrome. It describes this mode as the mode in which all your browsing history and downloads will not be tracked. A simple blank cookie will be generated at the start of the session and it will be destroyed at the end of your incognito session.

In this way you can log into more than one Google accounts one in the standard mode and other in the incognito mode.

1. Security:

USB Drives are one of the major tool through which data transfer takes place. In order to protect your data from getting stolen from you computer with the help of a USB drive you can make the USB drives read only.
Go to  ‘HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies‘ and   create a new DWORD value ‘WriteProtect‘ and set its value to 1. This will enable you to read from USB drives, but you won’t be able to copy data to it.


2. Sorting Files:

Quite often you want the files to appear according to their names in explorer. In order to restore the ASCII file ordering, perform the following hack :
Go to ‘HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Policies\Explorer’ and create a new DWORD value called as ‘NoStrCmpLogical’ and set its value to 1.

3. Speeding Up Menu loading time:

In order to make your menus load faster, perform the following tweak.
Go to ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Control Panel\Desktop‘ and right click ‘MenuShowDelay’ and click ‘Modify’. Change the string value to some nearby 100 value.

4. Reducing Folder Accessibility Time: 

To speed up the access to any folder that is pinned to start menu, perform the following hack
Go to ‘HKCR\Folder\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers’ and right click ‘ContextMenuHandlers‘ and click ‘New|Key‘. Type ” (blank space and no quotation marks) and press Enter. Select any folder and right click on it to select ‘Pin to Start Menu’ while holding Shift key.

5. Multiple Logins in Messenger:

By default you are allowed only a single login at a time on Live Windows Messenger. You can override this by
Go to ‘HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsLive\Messenger’ and create a new DWORD value ‘Multiple Instances’ and its values as 1.

4. Right click on My Computer--> Properties.

5. Advanced--> Performance Settings.

6. Advanced--> Change.

7. Select the Pen Drive.

8. Click on Custom Size.

"Check the value of space available"

9. Enter the same in the Initial and Max columns.

"Here you just used the space of Pen Drive as a Virtual Memory".

10. Now restart your PC.

Finally check the general start up time and also speed of your PC. So, you can have a high speed system in low cost.

Notepad Trick to Open notepad continuously

This simple computer prank consists of a code below that will drive your friend crazy as it opens notepad continuously.
When you type the below code and rename it as *.bat it take the above showed icon shape.

To Open Notepad continuously in your friend’s computer:

Type the code in notepad as :

@ECHO off
:top
START %SystemRoot%\system32\notepad.exe
GOTO top

Save it as “notepad.BAT” and send it.

Note: If you want to try it, then go ahead and when you built this file double click to open it. But beware it slows your system and you will be left with no other option than to restart, as this script opens 100’s of notepad window. So, If you want to try this than save all your work and then run this file.

Install Windows xp Very Fast

Now, this tip will be very helpful for those who frequently install windows xp operating system. Normally OS installation takes around 40 minutes to complete, but through this trick you can now save 10-15 minutes. This simple tricks goes this way.





1. Boot through Windows XP CD.
2. After all the files are completely loaded, you get the option to select the partition. Select “c”.
3. Now Format the partition, whether it is normal or quick with NTFS or FAT
4. Once the formatting is completed, All the setup files required for installation are copied. Restart your system by pressing Enter.
Now, here begins the Simple trick to save 10-15 minutes.
5. After rebooting, you get a screen where it takes 40 minutes to complete or finalize the OS installation.
6. Now, Press SHIFT + F10 Key ->  This opens command prompt.
7. Enter “Taskmgr” at the command prompt window. This will open Task Manager.
8. Click the Process Tab, here we find a process called Setup.exe -> Right Click on Setup.exe -> Set Priority -> Select High or Above Normal. Initially it will be Normal.
Thats it, no more work to do. Relax your self and see how fast the installation process completes

Sometimes the program will allow you to make free calls once you purchase a subscription, however this depends on how much you spend on the program and what time of the day you use it.
3.      Google
It may not surprise you that Google has numerous programs that will allow you to call both landlines and mobile phones for cheap or at no cost at all.
Google Voice is a great option for calling internationally and you can also use the Google Voip app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch as well. Gmail Voice and Video Chat is another popular option, and they both differ from Google Voice because you can make video calls directly from your e-mail account.
4. Yahoo Messenger
If you happen to have a Yahoo account, then be sure to check out the international calling rates which can cost as little as 1 cents per minute, and you can also take advantage of their free voicemail program as well. Not only that, you can also chat with your loved ones using a full-screen video that is available through the program.
5.      ComBOTS
This program will allow you to make international calls from your laptop or even your landline phone for cheap or sometimes at no cost at all. Not only that, the program also offers cheap international calling rates for mobile phone numbers, and there is also a video and audio chat feature as well.
6.      iChat
Although this program is specifically for Mac users, it is slowly becoming one of the most popular programs for cheap international calling programs because it will work with your AIM or MobileMe account, and it also has an instant messaging app as well. Not only that, you can also use the videoconference chat option so you can video chat with three other users at the same time.

5 Great Free Android Apps

Android is rapidly catching up with Apple in the smartphone war, mainly thanks to it’s great App Store, which is the only one anywhere near large enough to have a chance at taking down Apple. So let’s have a look at some of the best free Apps on the Android Marketplace, you’ll find some of them are also found on the App Store as well.






1. Shazam
By far one of the apps I use the most. This great little app can be found on the App Store as well, but on the Android Market it’s completely free! What it does is allow you to tag songs that you hear so you can download them later. Say for instance you were listening to the radio and you heard a song that you liked, but you didn’t know the name of it. Fire up Shazam and it will listen to the song and identify it. It will then give you the option to search for it on Youtube or download via Amazon.

2.Barcode Scanner
There’s a couple of different Barcode Scanners on the Android market, but in particular is the one from the ZXing Team. Once again it’s free, and what it does is use your Smartphones camera to scan a barcode and grab barcode information. It works with both the Android Market QR barcodes and barcodes that you find on every day products. It doesn’t always work, but generally it does. Once it finds the barcode information, It then presents you with three buttons for Product Search, Web Search and Google Shopper that you can use to find the lowest price of the item on the web.

3.Google Goggles
Now this is a cool little app from Google. What it does is allow you to look at something with the camera on your smartphone. It could be a landmark, a book, a bag of crisps, anything, and it will try and recognize what it is and do a search for it on Google. It can work things out based on your location, so say you were looking at the Eiffel Tower, and it found that you were in Paris, it would put two and two together and show you search results for the Eiffel Tower. A great app for using in every day life and showing off to your friends.

4.Google Sky Map
This app just blows me away, it’s one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. Again it’s from Google and just like all the other Apps it’s free. You fire this baby up and it will use the phones compass, date and time, accelerometer and GPS (where possible) to show you a map of the sky where your looking. So say you point your phone to a certain star that you see, it will tell you what one that is, and what star constellation it’s part of. Point it anywhere in the sky and it will give you a detailed map of exactly what you’re seeing. You can even browse it manually and search for planets and stars. It will then direct you where to look in the sky so you can see them for yourself. Definitely one of the coolest Android Apps going.

5.Where’s My Droid
How many times have you put your phone on silent, and then can’t remember where it is? You can try calling it, but it’s on silent so you won’t hear it, and if it’s fallen down the back of your sofa, good luck finding it. But that’s where this great app comes in. Where’s My Droid, allows you to send a message to your phone containing a certain pass-phrase. Once it receives the message it will start ringing your phone at full volume, over-riding the silent mode until you find it. It can even give you a GPS location if you have GPS enabled. A great app, and could be a life saver some day when you lose your phone.
